Tyler Moskalick: 2016 Tennis Outlook

The Whiting Oiler tennis season is underway and under with new head coach Mark Harnew. Coach Harnew is ready for this great opportunity to take over the very successful program that Whiting has. Harnew believes that this team has a lot of talent and potential. Assisting Coach Harnew is Adam Baez, who was once the head coach at Highland high school and was a part of a state title run in the doubles tournament .

This year’s team has high expectations to win another sectional title and make it five years in a row. Harnew expects the success to carry on because of the experience that is coming back from last year. Going into the season Harnew is seeing a lot of hard work from his players and thinks that the team will keep improving as the season goes on.

Coach Harnew said, “I’m really excited for the season to start with a lot of tough matches on the schedule.”

When asked about his thoughts on winning another sectional he said he’s looking forward to sectionals and it won’t be easy but believes that his team has got what it takes to get it done.

Two seniors on the team Brianna Baez and Kata Beš both have a lot of experience with tennis and playing before high school. When both asked about coaching change Baez said “It’s different but is ready for the change and her mindset and attitude will stay the same as years past.” Beš said, “Coach young will be missed but Harnew has stepped into the role and is doing a great job getting us ready for the season.”

These two are the leaders of the team and have to get the underclassman in shape and ready for competition. Harnew has set goals for the season and said they are to help Baez advance as far as she can in the individual tournament and to of course get better every day.

The season started on Monday, April 12 against HAST.  Whiting won that match 5-0.
